ARTICLE – SEPTEMBER 2026
The June quarter GDP confirmed a step down in growth from a peak of 2.6 per cent at the end of 2025 to 2.1 per cent. Slower growth is a central theme of the tightening in economic policy in 2026 as a means to lower the inflation rate. It is yet to fully play out.

Private credit is facing a credibility test. No two private credit fund managers are the same, and periods of volatility are when those differences become most apparent. Ultimately, outcomes are determined not by the headline return itself, but by the depth, discipline and risk management underpinning the underwriting process.
In more buoyant markets, investors have often assessed performance primarily through the lens of returns. Yet returns alone are an incomplete measure of manager quality. When conditions become more challenging, attention shifts to how those returns were generated, the risks taken to achieve them, and how effectively those risks are managed when market conditions change. It is this discipline, rather than performance in isolation, that separates managers over the long term.
